Every child enters the world as a unique and wonderful being, no matter their skin color, race, or the status and achievements of their parents. But some babies are born truly extraordinary, like the twins of Canadian-Nigerian photographer Judith Nwokocha.
Her son, Kamis, has dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes, resembling his mother’s appearance. However, his sister Kachi is an albino, standing in stark contrast to her brother. Judith shares that she had always dreamed of having twins, and when she went for her ultrasound, she already had a strong feeling about what the doctor would say. Her intuition proved right—she was carrying two babies.
At a later check-up, however, doctors delivered disheartening news: one of the twins might be born with Down syndrome. “At seven weeks, Kachi was lagging behind in development—she was very tiny and wasn’t growing properly. I remember the doctors telling me she might not survive. I’m so grateful she did!”
By the 37th week, it became clear that Kachi had stopped growing, and an emergency procedure was necessary to save her life. Judith underwent a C-section. Kamis was born first at 9:44 PM, followed shortly by Kachi.
“I was overjoyed to see her born perfectly healthy! Both babies were fine, despite all the worry and fear they’d caused me. Apart from her different skin tone, she’s my little replica.”
Indeed, aside from minor vision issues and sensitive skin, Kachi is completely healthy. Naturally, her unique appearance draws attention wherever they go, but Judith remains unfazed by the curious looks from strangers. “She’s beautiful just as she is,” Judith says proudly, “and I wouldn’t have her any other way.”
