In Idaho, a young woman was having lunch with her family when, at one point, two elderly women sitting at a neighboring table handed her a note. She couldn’t believe the nasty message scrawled on a sweet pink sheet of paper.
Katy Leach wasn’t particularly concerned about who was around her. All she wanted was to spend some quality time with her family and her 10-month-old son. The baby was doing what babies do when they’re happy—clapping, laughing, and occasionally shouting. “He was excited as everyone wished him a happy birthday. When one of the waitresses approached, he shouted loudly to say hello,” Katy explained. “We all tried to calm him down, but most of the time he was just overwhelmed by all the excitement. He wasn’t crying out of anger or madness, but simply from joy and excitement.” Katy also mentioned that the baby didn’t cry constantly, but only during moments of heightened emotion. At just 10 months old, he doesn’t yet understand how to behave properly in public.
At one point, the two women, who appeared to be in their 50s or 60s, approached Katy and handed her a note before returning to their table. Katy was stunned by the audacity of these impatient women, who clearly lacked compassion and understanding when voicing their opinion in writing.
“Thank you for ruining our dinner with your screaming child. Sincerely, the table behind you,” read the bright pink note. The young mother was bewildered by these words. She tried to rectify the situation and defend herself and her son. Katy approached the elderly women’s table and explained that the baby was still learning how to behave appropriately in public.
The women responded by comparing their grandchildren to Katy’s child, claiming that theirs would never behave in such a manner. But if their grandchildren do behave well, it’s certainly not because of their disgruntled grandmothers who believe they have the right to interfere in other people’s lives and lecture strangers on parenting. Katy complained to the restaurant manager. Upon hearing what had happened, he was as astonished as she was. The manager said that the meal would be covered by the restaurant and that they would be welcome to dine there with Drew anytime.
Texas Roadhouse understands that families with children want to eat out too, and they have created an environment perfect for that. The rude women were wrong to think they could dictate how others should raise their children. Clearly, they hadn’t spent enough time with their own grandchildren to understand how unpredictably babies can behave.
