During her prenatal checkups, Courtney Williams Baker received the news that her baby had Down syndrome. Her doctor suggested terminating the pregnancy, but Courtney and her husband chose a different path – they made the courageous decision to carry the pregnancy to term.

Years later, when her daughter Emersyn turned two in 2016, Courtney penned an emotional letter to the doctor who had delivered the initial, challenging news. In her letter, she contrasted her experience with that of a friend whose doctor had offered unwavering support throughout her pregnancy. “A friend told me that her prenatal doctor would always say, ‘He’s perfect,’ during her sonograms,” Courtney wrote. Her friend later revisited the same doctor after giving birth to a child with Down syndrome, only to be met with the same affirming words: “I told you, he is flawless.”

Reflecting on her own experience, Courtney described the overwhelming sense of vulnerability she felt during her pregnancy. “When I came to you, I was terrified, anxious, and completely heartbroken. It was the most difficult time in my life, and I desperately needed you to offer me truth and reassurance about my baby. Instead, you advised me to terminate the pregnancy and painted a bleak picture of life with a child with Down syndrome,” she wrote. “You repeatedly questioned our decision to continue the pregnancy, making an already challenging situation even more unbearable.”

Courtney admitted that these appointments filled her with dread. “From that first visit, I began to fear my doctor’s appointments. You never told me the truth – that my child was perfect,” she poignantly stated.  In her letter, Courtney shared the profound impact Emersyn has had on her life. “Emersyn has not only brought immeasurable joy to our lives but has also touched the hearts of thousands. She has filled our lives with more smiles, laughter, and sweeter kisses than we ever thought possible. She has instilled in us a sense of purpose and happiness that words cannot adequately describe. Emersyn has shown us the true essence of beauty and the profound power of unconditional love.”
