Maryanne and Tommy Pilling made history as the first couple with Down syndrome to marry in Britain, building a life together despite societal prejudices. Their romance began after meeting and dating for over a year, and Maryanne’s sister, Lindi, recalled that Maryanne returned home from a date with Tommy wearing “the biggest smile.” Their love culminated in a dream wedding at St. Mary’s Church in Shoeburyness, Essex, in July 1995, fulfilling Maryanne’s lifelong desire for a traditional big white wedding.
The proposal was a heartfelt gesture: Tommy first approached Maryanne’s mother, Linda, with a toy ring from a vending machine. With her blessing, he then selected a proper ring from a jewelry shop. After the wedding, the couple displayed their affection openly, frequently holding hands in public. They defied expectations by living independently while receiving support from their nearby family, and Maryanne often expressed her adoration, saying, “Tommy and I never argue. I love my husband very much. He is my best friend.”
Tragically, their happy life was disrupted when Tommy was diagnosed with dementia. The disease gradually changed him, leading to arguments and causing him to forget Maryanne, even telling her that he did not love her. This heartbreaking shift left Maryanne “absolutely crushed and hysterical,” and the couple was forced to separate in 2019 as his condition progressed.
The couple faced another devastating loss in 2020 when Tommy contracted COVID-19 and passed away. Maryanne was left heartbroken and “absolutely lost.” Her sister shared on their Facebook page that Maryanne struggled to cope with the pandemic and her husband’s death, often breaking down despite trying to maintain a brave face.
Even a year after Tommy’s passing, Maryanne’s love for him remains strong. Though their physical life together ended tragically, she continues to honor his memory. In interviews, she revealed that simply hearing Tommy’s name still brings a smile to her face, proving that their pioneering love story continues to live on in her heart.
