Love That Defied Decades of Prejudice: Their Interracial Marriage Still Thrives!

Leslie Uggams, a multi-talented American actress and singer, has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over seven decades. Beginning her performances at just six years old, she quickly became a trailblazer in the entertainment industry. Uggams was the first African American series regular on a variety show and later earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her iconic role as Kizzy Reynolds in Roots. Her stage career also flourished, earning her a Tony Award for her performance in Hallelujah, Baby!
While studying at the Professional Children’s School in New York, Uggams met her future husband, Grahame Pratt. Despite Pratt returning to Australia, the couple reunited and married in 1965, at a time when interracial marriage was still illegal in some U.S. states. Their love transcended social and legal barriers, showcasing their determination to be together despite societal challenges.
Their nearly 60-year marriage has faced its share of difficulties, including prejudice and hate mail directed at their interracial relationship. Uggams recalls the painful letters filled with slurs, but she credits their lasting bond to a shared sense of humor and constant laughter, even during tough times. Their ability to maintain joy and resilience has been central to their enduring partnership.
Pratt, an Australian in the entertainment industry, had never dated a Black woman before meeting Uggams. His mother’s only concern when meeting Leslie was whether she was Presbyterian, which she was, adding a light-hearted note to the challenges they faced. Uggams acknowledges that being with a non-American white man made some aspects of their journey easier, but prejudice was still a reality they had to navigate together.
Together, Uggams and Pratt built a loving family with two children, Danielle and Justice, both of whom have pursued careers in theater. At 81, Leslie Uggams continues to work, most recently appearing in Deadpool as Blind Al. Her enduring career and marriage stand as a testament to her talent, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of love.
