In 2012, while expecting a child, Kathy Heim received a devastating diagnosis: necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and aggressive infection that was literally “eating” her from the inside. Doctors warned her that her only chance of survival was to terminate the pregnancy and undergo urgent surgery. The recommendation was clear, and the stakes were terrifyingly high.

Thirteen years later, in 2025, Kathy is surrounded by a loving and supportive family. Ariel has grown into a beautiful, independent teenager who is the center of her mother’s world. Kathy has adapted to life with prosthetics, learning to drive, paint, and travel, embracing each day with gratitude and determination.
