Hollywood Legend Seen with Cane After Surgery!: Fans Concerned After Her Painful Fall!

Jean Smart was recently spotted in New York City using a cane, just a week after revealing she had suffered a painful knee injury. The 73-year-old Hacks actress was dressed casually yet stylishly and was accompanied by two handlers as she made her way to a performance of her one-woman Broadway show, Call Me Izzy. Despite her injury, Smart showed remarkable determination to return to the stage.
The injury happened on the Fourth of July while Smart was walking with her sons. She tripped over a small barrier on the groundâsomething she described as about the size of a hockey puck. She told People that she âwent down like a ton of bricksâ and mentioned that a health worker informed her they see âone a dayâ of people tripping on the same obstacle. When she asked why more complaints werenât made, she said New Yorkers typically just shrug it off and say, âEh, what are you gonna do?â
As a result of the injury, Smart was forced to take a two-week break from her show. On July 8, she underwent knee surgery, and during her recovery, Tony Award winner Johanna Day stepped in to cover her role. The production was excited to announce Smartâs return to the stage this past Tuesday with an Instagram Story saying, âTonight! Welcome Back Jean.â
Despite her injury, Smart was eager to continue performing. She told People she planned to wear a leg brace but reassured fans that her show wouldnât involve âbig tap numbers and somersaulting across the stage.â In fact, she found that the brace added a new dimension to her performance, making her character feel more âtrappedâ and giving her vocal delivery an extra edge since she couldnât move freely. Call Me Izzy tells the story of a Louisiana woman trapped in an abusive marriage who uses poetry as a means of escape.
Smart remains optimistic about her recovery, saying, âhopefully by the time we close, Iâll be skipping around.â The show is scheduled to run through August 24. Her commitment to returning to the stage despite her injury speaks volumes about her professionalism and resilience. Her experience also serves as a reminder of the unexpected dangers posed by everyday obstacles in a city like New York.
