Giving an Old Bedside Table a New Life: Step-by-Step Guide With Photos!

On the last days of my vacation, I decided to do a general cleaning at home. I even got to the basement, where there was a real warehouse of old things. Many of them were sent to the trash without any regrets, but some caused doubts. It was especially a pity for the old bedside table on elegant legs, which served my parents for many years. The Soviet bedside table remained standing in the corner, waiting for my husband’s verdict.

When he returned from work, he carefully examined this worn-out piece of furniture and confidently stated that he would make a “candy” out of it. Intrigued, I received a list of necessary materials and went to the store. The next day, work began on transforming the old bedside table.

The first stage: preparation. I carefully removed the handles, glass doors and shelves. While I was washing the glass elements, my husband took a grinder with a petal disc and completely removed the old varnish and paint. Then he leveled the surface with a sander with a fine-grained disc. Then several layers of primer were applied, each of which was thoroughly dried. The final layer was a layer of black acrylic paint. Already at this stage, the bedside table looked modern, like a designer item. But we decided not to stop there.

The second stage: creating a soft seat. We needed a solid piece of plywood. My husband cut a new countertop out of it. I prepared several pieces of foam rubber of the same size. If you have thick enough foam, then one layer is enough. I made one of the sheets larger, adding 10 cm on each side to secure it on the back of the countertop.

My husband secured the foam with a construction stapler. The largest piece was placed on top. For the upholstery, I chose a light blue fabric. I cut out a canvas from it, which completely covered the foam, and also secured the fabric with a stapler. The last touches. We added decorative buttons to make the seat more stylish.

After that, we installed a soft seat on the bedside table, screwed the handles in place – and that’s it! The Soviet bedside table has turned into an original decorative pouf! Conclusion. I am very pleased with the result. We managed to create a stylish and reliable pouf-bedside table, which now decorates the corridor. It is convenient to put on shoes on it, and it looks, in my opinion, just great. This transformation of old furniture was a success! How would you give a second life to old things? Share your ideas!
