A Couple With Down Syndrome Had a Son: Now He Is 27 – Their Pics!

Over 20 years ago, Patti White from California received news that both delighted and worried her. Her daughter, Lisa, announced that she was pregnant. Lisa has Down syndrome, a genetic chromosomal condition that manifests in varying degrees of physical and intellectual disabilities. However, many people forget that many individuals with Down syndrome can take care of themselves, hold jobs, and lead independent lives.

The likelihood of two people with Down syndrome having a child is lower than in other couples, as men with Down syndrome rarely father children. When Patti White learned that her grandson had been born, she was very surprised but fully supported her daughter Lisa and her decision to keep the baby. At 29, Lisa had her own apartment and worked full-time at a local Goodwill store. She had been living independently for 11 years.

“She got along with everyone. She could do everything except operate the cash register. She liked being there, and they liked her,” Patti said in an interview with Voice in 2016. Lisa also began a relationship with a man who had Down syndrome. They dated but lived in separate homes. Patti understood that her daughter had a healthy, mature relationship, and they discussed topics such as birth control and safe sex.

Nick, now 24, is a handsome young man raised by his mother and grandmother, who are incredibly proud of him. The birth of children is a risk for everyone, but Lisa was especially vulnerable, largely because of others’ opinions about her decision to become a mother. Some of Lisa’s friends even stopped speaking to her because their parents feared that Lisa’s example would influence their daughters to want children too.

This mother-and-son team has spent decades showing the world the value of people with Down syndrome. Patti, Lisa, and Nick’s story also contains vital information, and we hope it helps others make decisions. They inspire and deserve our respect and admiration. Please share if you agree.
