“He Wanted To Build A House On Water”: The Man Got So Inspired That He Built An Entire “Island”!
Nestled in the waters of British Columbia, Canada, lies a unique maritime marvel known as Freedom Cove, home to Wayne Adams and Catherine King. The couple cherishes their aquatic abode, valuing its tranquility and pristine environment over any urban dwelling.
Nearly thirty years ago, Adams and King embarked on their aquatic life journey by constructing a modest floating home of 15 square meters, which also served as the venue for their nuptials. As their family expanded, so did their floating haven, evolving into an enchanting island-like complex.
The expansion included the addition of a standalone kitchen, a beacon, an art exhibit space, and a boat garage. The duo also established five greenhouses to cultivate their own fruits and vegetables, complemented by Adams’ ability to fish directly from the living room, thanks to a strategically placed hole in the floor.
Reflecting on King’s background as a dancer, Adams crafted a buoyant dance platform for her practice, alongside a studio for himself where he crafts sculptures and other artworks for sale to visitors and institutions. Remarkably, this aquatic paradise was constructed using just a hacksaw and hammer.
Freedom Cove is not without modern conveniences; it harnesses solar power for electricity and relies on a wood stove for warmth. Fresh water is sourced from a nearby waterfall, underscoring the couple’s sustainable lifestyle.
While some might view such a lifestyle as challenging, Adams and King consider themselves fortunate to inhabit such a unique and self-sufficient home. Not far from Freedom Cove floats their son’s residence, constructed on similar principles, continuing the family’s legacy of life on the water.
