Neither Tina, nor Turner: It will be surprising to know the real name of the legendary singer Tina Turner
In the world of show business, it is common for stars to adopt stage names that eventually become synonymous with their identity. Such was the case with Tina Turner, whose chosen name became so seamlessly intertwined with her persona that many are unaware of the different name that once appeared on her official documents.
The renowned artist, the owner of 8 Grammy awards, was actually born as Anna May Bullock. During her teenage years, Anna, along with her mother and sister, relocated to St. Louis. It was there that she encountered the captivating world of rhythm and blues, along with a musician who specialized in that genre, Ike Turner.
Anna first witnessed Ike Turner’s mesmerizing performance with his band, The Kings of Rhythm, at the Manhattan Club in East St. Louis. She was deeply impressed by his talent, recalling that she was almost entranced while watching him play. Anna expressed her desire to sing in Ike’s band and asked him for an opportunity. He promised to contact her but failed to follow through. Taking matters into her own hands, Anna took the stage during the next concert’s intermission and made a remarkable vocal performance. Impressed by her singing, Ike invited her to collaborate. However, he insisted on a name change.
Initially, the aspiring star performed under the pseudonym Little Ann. But as it became evident that she had a promising future, Ike suggested the name “Tina Turner.” He even renamed his group as the “Ike and Tina Turner Review.”
In 1962, Tina and Ike got married but it proved to be a harrowing trial. Ike transformed into a domestic tyrant, prompting Tina to escape from the tumultuous relationship. She only had 36 cents in her pocket as a memory of her past, along with the resonant name that would soon captivate the entire world.
