“This Is The First Time I’ve Spoken About It”: Colin Farrell Opened Up About Being a Father To a Son With Special Needs!
Colin Farrell, a renowned actor, has traditionally kept his personal life private, especially regarding his son, James, who was born with a rare genetic condition. However, Farrell has recently become more open about his family’s challenges and his efforts through the Colin Farrell Foundation, which he established to support research and provide assistance to those affected by similar disorders. This newfound transparency underscores his profound dedication to both his family and the cause he is deeply passionate about.
Farrell’s residence in Los Angeles is currently bustling with activity, a stark contrast to the typical Hollywood atmosphere. Despite the overwhelming nature of the scene, it is all in service of a cause very dear to him. Surrounded by photographers and film crews, the 48-year-old actor keeps a watchful eye on his 20-year-old son, James, who is enjoying a game of catch in the backyard with his caregiver.
Farrell, who is the father of two sons—James and Henry—shared James with model Kim Bordenave, though their relationship was brief. Even after their separation, Farrell remains committed to ensuring that James receives the support he needs throughout his life.
James was born in 2003, and in early 2021, Farrell and Bordenave sought legal conservatorship for their son, stating in court documents that James needs daily assistance with tasks such as meal preparation and dressing, while they manage his overall health and well-being.
James has Angelman syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder that affects communication, yet his expressive eyes convey much. When he notices a journalist nearby, he playfully tosses his small basketball in her direction, inviting her into his world with a friendly gesture. Farrell’s pride in his son is evident as he watches the interaction, showcasing the deep connection and joy they share.
“I want people to be kind to James,” Farrell expresses with sincerity. “I wish for him to be treated with kindness and respect.” In response to the need for support, Farrell is launching the Colin Farrell Foundation. This initiative aims to aid adult children with intellectual disabilities through advocacy, education, and the development of innovative programs to ensure they receive the necessary support to thrive.
“This is the first time I’m discussing this publicly, and the only reason I am is that I can’t consult James about it,” Farrell shares, his voice reflecting both resolve and paternal concern. Farrell communicates with James as if he fully understands everything, despite the challenges posed by Angelman syndrome. “I talk to James as if he’s 20 years old with complete fluency in English and mature cognitive abilities. However, since I can’t get a direct answer from him about his comfort with all this, I must make decisions based on my knowledge of James’s spirit and his inherent goodness.”
