The story of Mary Ann – the ugliest woman who did everything so that her children would not starve

Surely you have heard the name of Mary Ann Webster, who became the ugliest woman in history. But her appearance was the result of an illness that radically changed her fate. She was mocked most of her life. Actually she was a very strong and courageous woman.

Mary Ann was originally from London (born 1874), she grew up in a poor but large family. From an early age, she already worked as a nurse. At the age of 29, Mary Ann met Thomas Bevan (at that time she was very pretty) and soon they married.

The couple had four children. But at the age of 32, the woman began to have health problems. Her joints began to hurt, she had frequent headaches and sometimes it was even difficult for her to get out of bed. And doctors only shrugged, no one knew what was happening to her, and she did not have the opportunity to lie down, because she had to work.

Over time, her facial features were greatly distorted and elongated, her limbs enlarged and coarsened. The girl that was once so pretty completely changed and became unrecognizable. Unfortunately, at that time no one knew about such a disease as acromegaly. The secretion of growth hormone is disrupted during this disease.

At that difficult time her husband supported and loved her very much. But fate prepared another test for her. Thomas died and the woman had to raise four children alone. At that time her appearance was already changed and it was so difficult for her to communicate with people, go to work and earn money.

The woman was glad for any work, as long as they paid money. Once, she came across an advertisement for a competition for the ugliest woman, the prize for which was a good sum. For the sake of her children, Mary Ann decided to take part in this competition. She won, and life became even harder.

People made fun of her, but she continued to work for the sake of her children. They had no one but their mother and she did everything so that her children do not starve. She was a real mother.

In 1920, she was offered to perform at the Dreamland Circus, which was located on Coney Island. She agrees and goes overseas again for the sake of her children. At the circus, she performed in front of people who were eager to see the ugliest woman. She was specially dressed in women’s outfits to emphasize her shortcomings. At that time she was a real circus star.

Unfortunately, people with acromegaly do not live long. Mary died at the age of 59.

Mary Ann Webster went into the history as the ugliest woman, although she was just a mother who did everything so that her children would not starve. You should never judge a person only his/her appearance…
