The hospital room was cloaked in a deathly silence.

The dim glow of the monitor illuminated Alex’s pale face, a police officer who had risked his life to save others… and now teetered on the edge of death.

The dog lay down beside him, resting her head on his chest, as if keeping him awake with her warmth.
