Turkmenistan is often regarded as one of the most secluded nations globally. Recently, the government has implemented several rules regarding women’s appearances. For instance, in 2018, it was decreed that women are prohibited from dyeing their hair blonde.
In certain governmental organizations, traditional attire and headscarves are now mandatory. Furthermore, seemingly innocuous beauty treatments like eyelash and nail enhancements are also prohibited.
Cosmetic surgeries and beauty treatments are now conducted discreetly within homes and are exclusive to trusted clientele. Statements such as “I opt for manicures in subtle shades,” “I’ve made some cosmetic adjustments without drawing attention,”
“I secretly get eyelash extensions from a friend but keep it to myself,” “I underwent rhinoplasty without anyone noticing,” and “My family is against me undergoing any cosmetic surgery,” reflect the experiences of Turkmen women navigating these restrictions.
