Michael Jackson’s pet chimpanzee, Bubbles, is living out his golden years at an animal sanctuary at the age of 41, a fact highlighted on the 15th anniversary of the pop music icon’s death.

Bubbles was gifted to Michael by a Hollywood trainer in 1986. Throughout Michael’s life, Bubbles made frequent appearances on television shows, in movies, music videos, and even traveled with the singer to Japan. Following Michael Jackson’s passing in 2009, his estate continued to ensure Bubbles received care. Subsequently, Jackson’s lawyer and family members often visited the star’s beloved pet at the sanctuary.

 

The renowned primate now resides at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula. As Bubbles enters his twilight years, with chimpanzees typically living 50 to 60 years in captivity, sanctuary director Patti Ragan shared that Bubbles enjoys extensive freedom there. This includes exploring tunnels, building nests in trees, taking daily afternoon naps, and engaging in painting sessions.

Weighing 180 pounds, Bubbles receives regular veterinary check-ups and care from sanctuary staff. Despite being Michael Jackson’s former pet, Bubbles is known for his friendly demeanor, interacting well with visitors and other animals, having never endured mistreatment.

While Michael Jackson’s music occasionally fills the sanctuary’s air, it’s noted that Bubbles shows no special preference for it over the other primates who call the sanctuary home.
