Declared Dead for 2 Minutes, But Now She’s Swimming!: What She Looked Like and How She Ended Up Like This!

Ellie Challis, a remarkable 17-year-old athlete, is preparing to represent Great Britain in swimming at the Tokyo Paralympics—a journey defined by resilience and an unshakable will. At just 16 months old, Ellie battled meningitis and was given only a five percent chance of survival. The illness led to the amputation of both her legs above the knee and both arms below the elbow. Her father, Paul, who became her full-time carer, recalled the terrifying moment when her heart stopped for two minutes. Despite countless hospital visits and therapy sessions, Ellie’s determination and sunny outlook helped her beat the odds and begin walking before her twin sister.

The public first came to know Ellie in 2006, when she appeared on the front page of The Sun, proudly walking on her first set of prosthetic legs—funded by community donations. That photo touched hearts nationwide and symbolized her courage. From a young age, Ellie never let her disability hold her back. She played football with able-bodied friends, and at 14, became the first British quadruple amputee to learn snowboarding. Her drive stemmed from a simple philosophy: “Everyone assumes you can’t do a lot until they actually meet you.”

Ellie’s swimming career began somewhat by chance in 2015 when she joined a disabled swimming club. Her talent quickly emerged—within just a few years, she joined the GB regional squad and began breaking records. At an international meet in April 2019, she shattered British, European, and world records in butterfly and breaststroke. Later that year, she earned a bronze medal at the World Para Swimming Championships in London, all while keeping her eyes firmly on Tokyo. Even the COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t slow her down—her father built a pool at home so she could continue training.

Now the youngest member of Team GB’s Paralympic squad, Ellie is set to compete in four individual events. She credits fellow para-swimmer Ellie Simmonds as a major source of inspiration, but she herself has become a role model to many. Her relaxed attitude and cheerful smile belie the intense work behind the scenes. For those who know her, Ellie’s accomplishments speak volumes about the power of grit, optimism, and a refusal to accept limits.

In addition to her sporting career, Ellie is studying baking in college with dreams of opening her own cake shop. Her father, now living in Manchester to support her training, beams with pride at everything she has overcome. As her doctor, Dr. Simon Nadel, who once saved her life, put it, Ellie’s achievements are “remarkable.” Her story is a shining example of triumph over adversity and a reminder to the world that, as she always says, “There’s always a way.”
