Over a decade ago, a couple stumbled upon a hidden gem – a neglected property with overgrown greenery, a dilapidated house, and a price tag of only $700. Despite its initial state, the potential for a charming summer house nestled near a forest and river was undeniable.

They knew this was it – their future getaway.

The first step was tackling the overgrown plot. They cleared brush, mowed grass, and began restoring the house. Next came the plan for the land – a designated vegetable garden with designated areas for lawns and flowerbeds. A green hedge was chosen for the fencing.

Since there was no existing water source, a well became their top priority. The husband took the lead, crafting a decorative well cover, a pergola, a refreshing outdoor shower, and a handy storage shed. His handiwork extended to the terrace, balcony, and porch – most of the dacha furniture boasting his carpentry skills.

For water access, they installed a seasonal pipe connected to the well. A pump drew water for the kitchen sink, heated by a basin heater. Wastewater is directed to a small pit.

Practicality, aesthetics, and affordability were key considerations throughout the project. For example, their corner sofa is a simple yet ingenious creation – a timber and plywood podium topped with comfy mattresses and cushions.

The resourceful couple even upcycled old doors and windows for their summer shower, with the wife adding a stylish touch by sewing Roman curtains.

Despite its modest size of 36 square meters, the dacha offers a cozy layout – a bedroom with a balcony, a living area, a kitchen, a veranda, and a small terrace.

Their first major landscaping project was an alpine slide with a charming pond. Stones were gathered from around the neighborhood, while conifers were nurtured from cuttings, creating a harmonious composition.

The dacha transforms throughout the seasons – a vibrant display of primroses in spring, a burst of summer color with irises, roses, and lilies, and an autumn showcase of dahlias and chrysanthemums.

However, their hearts belong to the fragrant lavender that thrives even amidst the house’s foundation stones.

The vegetable garden follows a “quality over quantity” approach. They opted for interesting options like melons, watermelons, fresh herbs, and a variety of vegetables, skipping the traditional potato patch. The fruit trees and shrubs are abundant, with blueberries, a favorite due to their preference for acidic soil, flourishing amongst them.

The most significant expense was the roof replacement at $500. Everything else involved smaller investments for gardening tools, furniture materials, and other essentials. However, the true value lies in the immense effort, creativity, and love poured into this project.

This happy couple has a future filled with plans for their beloved dacha. Cozy winter nights are spent brainstorming ideas, ensuring each spring brings exciting improvements and fresh inspiration to their cherished retreat.
