The horror “The Shining” made Shelley Duvall a world-famous star and forever inscribed in the history of cinema, but it also cost her health and mental well-being, because cooperation with Stanley Kubrick turned into real torture.

As Shelley’s partner in the film, Jack Nicholson, later recalled, the director was especially strict and intolerant with Duvall. He constantly criticized her game. And some especially difficult scenes forced to reshoot number of times. The script of the film itself included many emotionally difficult scenes, and Kubrick demanded that the actors play horror, confusion, hatred as authentically as possible. Duvall had to sob for 12 hours almost every day of filming, and Nicholson later admitted to reporters that Shelly once showed him tufts of hair that she had lost due to stress. Only years later, when the film gained cult status, Shelley’s efforts were appreciated.

After 2002, the star disappeared from the screens, and only a few years ago gave an interview where she said that she was suffering from a mental disorder.
