Emily knelt in front of her childhood home, barely noticing the cold rainwater streaming down her face and soaking her dress. The wet blue dress clung tightly to her large pregnant belly—her baby was due in just a few weeks. One hand instinctively rested on her stomach while the other tightly gripped her phone. Her husband’s name, Daniel, appeared on the screen once again. It was the third time she had called him, but all she heard were endless rings. “Please… answer…” she whispered, struggling to hold back her tears.
An open suitcase lay on the rain-soaked pavement in front of her. Tiny baby clothes, little socks, blankets, medical records, photographs, and brand-new baby shoes were scattered across the puddles. Everything she had spent months preparing for her child was now being drenched by the pouring rain.
Standing on the porch beneath the warm glow of a single porch light were three people: her mother, Margaret, her older brother, Michael, and his wife, Jessica. They watched her without the slightest trace of compassion.
“I told you to leave,” Margaret said coldly. “You’re never setting foot in this house again.”

Emily looked up at her mother through tear-filled eyes. “Mom… I have nowhere to go. Daniel is missing. I’m about to have this baby… please…”
“Don’t use that baby to make us feel sorry for you,” Jessica snapped. “You chose to marry him.”
Michael looked down at his sister with contempt. “If you’d listened to your family, you wouldn’t be sitting out here in the rain.”
Without saying another word, Emily reached for a tiny baby shirt that the wind had almost carried into the roadside ditch. Her hands trembled so badly that she could barely gather the soaked belongings back into the suitcase. “Michael…” she said quietly. “You know Daniel. He would never abandon me.”
Her brother smirked. “Maybe he finally realized who he married.”
Those words hurt even more than the rain. Emily pressed a soaked wedding photo of herself and Daniel against her chest before looking at her phone again. The call ended. Daniel hadn’t answered.
Then… a branch snapped behind her. Emily froze.
A tall man in a long black coat slowly emerged from the dark forest behind the house. His face was hidden beneath a deep hood, and his calm, deliberate steps made it seem as though he knew exactly why he was there. A flash of lightning illuminated a silver wedding band on his hand. For a split second, Emily’s heart skipped a beat.
“Daniel…?” she whispered.
The man said nothing. He strode toward her, roughly grabbed her by the shoulder, and jerked her around to face him. Emily cried out in pain, nearly losing her balance as he gripped both of her shoulders with frightening force. “Ah!… Let me go!” Emily cried in fear.
On the porch, all three family members instantly turned pale. Even Michael, who had looked so confident only moments before, instinctively took a step backward. Jessica suddenly shouted, “Wait!” She took a step toward Emily as if she were about to help her sister-in-law, but the moment she locked eyes with the stranger, she froze. The color drained from her face, her arms fell helplessly to her sides, and she didn’t dare take another step.
The stranger didn’t even look at her. Emily felt her heart pounding so violently that she could barely breathe. “Who are you? Where’s Daniel?” she asked with a trembling voice.
The stranger smirked. “He’s alive. But if you don’t stop looking for him, he won’t be for much longer.”
Emily slowly turned toward her family. “You know this man…”
No one answered. Their silence spoke louder than any words ever could. Just then, the phone in Emily’s hand suddenly vibrated. Everyone froze as the screen lit up: Daniel Calling… Emily immediately answered. “Daniel! Where are you?”
Heavy breathing came through the speaker. “Emily… don’t be afraid… I’m almost there…”
The call suddenly disconnected. The stranger cursed under his breath and snatched the phone from her hand, but it was already too late. The sound of a vehicle engine echoed from behind the trees as bright headlights pierced through the pouring rain.

The stranger spun around. A black SUV came to a stop directly in front of the gate, and the driver’s door flew open. A soaking wet man with a bandaged arm stepped out. It was Daniel. Emily couldn’t believe her eyes.
“Daniel…”
He ran straight to her, dropped to his knees beside her in the puddle, and wrapped his arms tightly around his wife, gently placing one hand on her pregnant belly. “I’m sorry… It took me so long to get back…”
Tears streamed down Emily’s face. “I knew it… I knew you would never leave me…”
At that moment, the stranger tried to run, but police officers rushed out of a second vehicle. “Don’t move!” Within seconds, handcuffs clicked around his wrists. Margaret covered her face and began to cry, while Michael lowered his head, realizing the truth could no longer be hidden.
Daniel slowly stood, never letting go of Emily’s hand. He looked at the house, then at the people who had just thrown his pregnant wife out into the pouring rain. “Family doesn’t do this to the people they love,” he said quietly.
Emily never looked back. Together, she and Daniel picked up the suitcase filled with the soaked baby clothes and slowly walked toward the SUV. The rain continued to pour, but it no longer felt cold. For the first time in a long time, they were finally together again.
